Each Sunday for most of the past decade I religiously watched Meet the Press with Tim Russert.  Even if I missed the morning program on NBC, I would try to catch it on MSNBC later that night or simply watch the Webcast at my convenience.  My friends and family alike joked with me about how loyal I was in watching this show.  They all liked Meet the Press, but didn’t relate to my insistence on absorbing the political views from the lens of this institution.

Yesterday one of my colleagues sent me an IM saying “did you hear that Tim Russert died!”  My response what shock replying back “WHAT???”  She replied back “I’m actually really sad… I feel like I know him.”

I’m normally not the type to get too emotional about death, especially when it’s expected or someone I don’t personally know as I largely view death as part of the basic cycle of life.  I also am rarely moved by celebrity deaths.  I definitely feel sympathy for the families who experience these losses, but I never could relate to the pain as if I really knew the person because I didn’t.

However, as my co-worker expressed in her IM, Russert seemed different.  Russert was a dogged questionnaire.  He was painfully unbiased.  He was also the best in his field.  However, he also had an authentic and genuine presence him about that made you feel like you knew him – trusted him – that he was one of the guys.  The political world, the institution of the free press, his family and friends, his co-workers, his viewers, and many others are saddened by his sudden departure.

I’m not very good at memorializing people or events, and am not going to attempt to do so here.  However, I think that one of Russert’s most enduring and lasting legacies will be the way he shaped each Sunday for many Americans setting an example to all by being the best at his profession, asking relentless questions that served to keep our nation’s political figures a little more honest, his remarkable ability to relate to others, and the honesty that made his loyal audience feel like that knew and trusted him.
